The Opera Orchestra and Choir of the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre have been the pillars of one of the most prominent opera houses in the Czech Republic for over a century. Since their foundation in 1919, the ensembles have built a reputation as ensembles with exceptional professionalism and expressive power, capable of interpreting both the opera repertoire and extensive vocal-instrumental works.
In recent years, the orchestra and choir have built a reputation thanks to a dramaturgy focused on demanding and less performed works of the 20th century as well as unjustly neglected opuses by Czech authors. The projects of „the Operas of Terezín Composers“ and the „Smetana Opera Cycle Ostrava 2024“, which earned the opera company a nomination for the prestigious International Opera Awards, have received a particularly strong response.
The Opera Choir, led by choirmaster Jurij Galatenko, has long been considered one of the best in the country. Under the artistic direction of music director Marek Šedivý, both ensembles continue to develop their sonic and interpretive identity with an emphasis on stylistic purity, expressive depth, and persuasiveness.
