Jan Ostrý was born in Prague, where he studied at the Prague State Conservatory (prof. F. Malotín). From 1992 he studied at the CNR de Versailles (prof. Ch. Rayneau and prof. J. Royer) and from 1996, he was a grantee of the French Goverment at the CNSM de Lyon, in the class of prof.Ph.Bernold and prof.R. Thuillier, where he was unanimously awarded the First Prize in 1999. In the course of his studies he gained prizes in various interpretation competitions ( Concertino Praga, Competition of F.X. Dussek in Prague, Competition of Czech Conservatories). He also visited a number of masterclasses under the leadership of B. Kuijken, K. Hünteler, J. Zoon, A. Marion and K. Zoeller.

As a soloist or a member of chamber ensembles he performed in several countries in Europe and also in various festivals – Styriarte in Graz, Haydn Festspiele in Eisenstadt, Prague Spring, for the Dutch Radio in Concertgebouw Amsterdam, International Flute Festival in Maastricht, St. Wenceslas Music Festival in Ostrava, Mozartiana Iuventus Prague, Concentus Moraviae (with Prague Philharmonia and J. Bělohlávek), Week of Pierre Boulez in Lyon (with P. Boulez), Czech Haydn Festspiele, Martinů Fest in Wien, Czech Season in France 2002, Neuberger Kultutage, Festival of Pierre Boulez in St. Etienne, Festival ORF „Eggenberger Schlosskonzerte“ in Graz, Czech Beethoven’s Festival and many others …

Jan Ostry recorded CD’s with chamber music of A. Rejcha and J. L. Dusik for the label Studio Matous (won The Critics Prize – Tip Harmonie), flute quartets by J.J.Ryba for Naxos, chamber music of Bach’s sons and complete of Bach’s sonatas for two flutes with H. Schmeiser for Nimbus Records. During the concert season 1999/2000 Jan Ostrý was a substitute as the solo-flutist in Orchestre National de Lyon, and in the season 2001/2002 the solo-flutist in Den Norske Operaen in Oslo. Since 2001 he has been regulary teaching at masterclasses of the European Flute Academy in Fiss and from 2003 at the Kulturtage in Neuberg. In this time, he is professor of flute and chamber music at the State Conservatory in Prague and in Faculty of Fine Arts in University of Ostrava.
