Jóhann Kristinsson

The Icelandic baritone Jóhann Kristinsson is a recipient of numerous awards. Last year, he was named “Classical Singer of the Year” at the Icelandic Music Awards. He won the prestigious singing competition “Stella Maris,” where he also received the Jury Prize of the Vienna Musikverein, and he placed third and won the Audience Award at the International Singing Competition “Das Lied” in Heidelberg. Additionally, he was a finalist at the International Robert Schumann Competition in Zwickau.

He completed his Master’s degree with distinction in the class of prof. Scot Weir at the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” Berlin, and was a member of the young artist program at the Hamburg State Opera. Furthermore, he gained musical inspiration from Thomas Quasthoff, Júlia Várady and Thomas Hampson among others.

The artist has worked with renowned conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt, Bertrand de Billy, Kent Nagano, Manfred Honeck and Cristian Măcelaru. He has performed at the Heidelberger Frühling, Oxford Lieder Festival, Martha Argerich Festival, Dresden Music Festival, and Schubertiade Hohenems, among others. He has also collaborated with prestigious orchestras such as the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Oslo Philharmonic, Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, International Bach Academy Stuttgart, Copenhagen Phil, Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra, Basque National Orchestra, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Iceland Symphony Orchestra, and the Bamberg Symphony.

This year, BIS Records released a CD featuring a recreation of the 1868 Bremen premiere of Johannes Brahms’ A German Requiem, with Jóhann performing the baritone solo. The recording was made in the Elbphilharmonie with the Hamburg State Orchestra, conducted by Kent Nagano.
