The Ostrava Youth Orchestra is an ambitious joint project of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ostrava and the Janáček University Conservatory in Ostrava, offering talented students the opportunity to experience professional orchestral practice. The project orchestra also performs at two major classical music festivals in the Moravian-Silesian region. These are the St. Wenceslas Music Festival and the Leoš Janáček International Music Festival.
The first concert of this student orchestra took place as part of the 14th St. Wenceslas Music Festival. Under the baton of Italian conductor Paolo Gatto, the concert took place in Ostrava’s Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary Queen of Peace. The work performed was the Stabat mater by Italian music gourmet Gioacchino Rossini. The concert was filmed for Noe television. The Ostrava Youth Orchestra also performed at the concert Youth Tunes Janáček on 26 October 2018 as part of the Leoš Janáček Music Marathon. Jealousy and Laotian Dances were performed. The conductor and horn player was Ondřej Vrabec. Another important project is a performance in 2019 as part of the International Leoš Janáček Festival in Hukvaldy, conducted by Petr Vronský.
