JFO & BOREYKO & VONDRÁČEK STRAVINSKY / RACHMANINOFF

Programme

Conductor Andrey Boreyko, internationally acclaimed for his interpretations of Russian modernism, returns to the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava as Chief Conductor with a programme that unites Stravinsky’s avant-garde sharpness with the emotional depth of Rachmaninov. The evening opens with the darkly symbolic Chant funèbre, long thought lost and dedicated to the memory of Rimsky-Korsakov. This is followed by Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, one of the most beloved concertos in the entire repertoire, featuring pianist Lukáš Vondráček, winner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition and an artist of international stature. The programme culminates in Stravinsky’s gripping ritual ballet Les Noces (The Wedding), driven by raw rhythm, percussive energy and the massive sonority of orchestra, chorus and vocal soloists (Veronika Rovná, Ksenia Chubunova, Martin Logar, Matija Bizjan). The Czech Philharmonic Choir Brno, under the direction of Petr Fiala, will bring monumental power and precise articulation to the work. The evening promises an exceptional musical event in the full intensity of the twentieth century.

Igor Stravinsky (1882–1971): Chant funèbre, op. 5

Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873–1943): Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18
