Programme

The Belgian ensemble Terra Nova Collective, led by clarinettist and historical-instrument specialist Vlad Weverbergh, will bring a programme devoted to the music of the High Classical period and its original sound colours to the unique setting of the Leaning Church near Karviná. The evening will open with Pieter van Maldere’s String Quartet in A major. A prominent figure in 18th-century Flemish music, Van Maldere combined the elegance of the emerging Classical style with vitality and unexpected harmonic turns. This will be followed by Mozart’s Quintet in E-flat major for horn and strings, in which the ensemble will be joined by Belgian horn player Bart Cypers. Here, the natural horn is not merely a virtuoso solo voice, but an equal partner to the string ensemble, revealing the rich spectrum of sound colours that Mozart explored in his composition. The highlight of the evening will be one of the most beautiful works in Mozart’s chamber music repertoire – the Clarinet Quintet in A major, K. 581. Vlad Weverbergh will perform it on a historical basset clarinet, an instrument with an extended lower register for which the work was originally intended. The audience will thus have an opportunity to experience Mozart’s music in an unusually mellow, dark and intimate sound world. Terra Nova Collective will offer a glimpse into the soundscape of the 18th century, in which Mozart’s familiar music acquires new colours through the use of historical instruments – alongside music by his Flemish contemporary, a composer whose work deserves to be rediscovered.
